The Visions in Mischteknik painting seminar at Torri Superiore, a medieval labyrinth turned ecovillage in the Ligurian foot-Alps of the Italian Riviera, hosted three weeks of study with three masterful teachers of the new sacred art movement, Laurence Caruana, Amanda Sage and A. Andrew Gonzalez.

Torri Superiore, Medieval Italian Ecovillage

Bringing together an international body of emerging artists to study in the lineage passed down from the Viennese grand master, Ernst Fuchs, this was a historic convergence nestled in a timeless valley of mythic proportions. Among the 20 students present from all across Europe and North America, many are already exhibiting or emerging in the international visionary art world, further propelled by this opportunity to connect with a technique which is as spirited in its insights and applications as the visions which it brings to life through the synthesis of mind, hand and spirit.

The Bridge to the Painting Studio at Torri Superiore

At the core of this experience are the instructors who seek to bridge intuition and new ways of seeing with the ability to channel concepts into luminous manifestations of the art spirit.

Laurence Caruana, a Gnostic alchemist, scholar, author and mystical artist continues to solidly deliver the foundations of the Misch technique in his third year offering the seminar at Torri Superiore. Through hands-on creativity and many multimedia presentations on the nature of visionary form and color, the class was brought into a higher and more refined awareness of the subtle nature of beauty in art, learning new ways to see the world we create through painting.

Amanda Sage worked with each student on one of the most intriguing subjects in art, the self portrait, challenging the artists to go beyond their preconceptions and truly observe themselves in the mirror, while being allowed the flexibility to develop complex color combinations which the Misch technique brings to life through multiple layers of transparent oil glazes.

Emma Watkinson Painting Her Self Portrait

Andrew Gonzalez welcomed eager students into the mysterious secrets of his delicate process with the airbrush, opening all new levels of possibility to the creative process through the most subtle techniques imaginable. This trinity of master artists set the tone for an unforgettable experience in the studio, and held a high frequency for those who had come great distances to drink from the fountain of art. Many seeds were planted over the three short weeks, and many possibilities dreamt of for future projects and convergences. Participants made full use of this fabled nexus by conducting interviews and group dialogues to catalogue the visionary art movement and its messages as these waves of vision crest upon the worldwide cultural shores.

Daniel Mirante (www.lila.info) and Andrew Gonzalez in dialogue at Torri Superiore

The seminar ended with a climactic exhibition of completed paintings and works in-progress at the eco-village of Torri Superiore, whose international inhabitants, guests and volunteers marveled at the brilliant expressions which manifested within the stone walls of this ancient palace. Students said their goodbyes as many returned to their homes and many traveled onward to visit further masterworks of the Italian Renaissance, and to Vienna, home of the Fuchs Villa, where the master’s works are on permanent exhibition.

Reflections on the occasion of the group show

THE IRRESISTIBLE FLOW OF TIME, A NEW WAVE OF VISIONARY ART

in the GALERIE 10, VIENNA, by De Es Schwertberger, August 25, 2010

1). Background

It has been over 50 years since Galerie 10 began representing the VIENNESE SCHOOL OF PHANTASTIC REALISM. Now, half a century later new movements have formed all over the world. In the Galerie 10, era’s and worlds collide in a kaleidoscope of imagery, opening portals to the “new waves”.

In 2008 an exhibition of this movement was presented in the BELVEDERE MUSEUM IN VIENNA, which focused extensively on its historical background, but forgot to give credit to the immense worldwide inspirational impact it had, and still has on the following generations. Phantastic Realism is not dead, rather it has taken on many new layers of actuality, one of them known now as International Visionary Art.

The current exhibition of 12 artists, who consider themselves to be part of the worldwide movement of a new wave of Visionary Art, proves that the flow of visionary energy that had already inspired the Viennese Masters, continues to express itself on a global scale with overwhelming vitality.

The show allows only a tiny glimpse into the gigantic unfolding vistas of this Art phenomenon. It unites works by a circle of colleagues of Amanda Sage and Leo Plaw, who are travellers between various wells of this movement, springing up all over the planet. The message is clear: The irresistible flow of time is drenched in the vital colours of Visionary Art.

2). What is “the New” of “the New Wave”?

The stream of images, which give mankind its collective inner face, is swelling with the waters of an ever-growing number of new rivers. The young visionaries drink inspiration from an increasing number of sources.

The new wave derives impulses from the old wave. The influence of the grandmasters cannot be overlooked; we find their marks on all continents. In addition, the entire lineage of the Visionary style is easily accessible through the Internet.

The Freudian-Einsteinian world-view, with its clear contours at the time of the early Phantastic Realists, 50 years ago, has been transformed into today’s multidimensional genetically manipulated digital phantom image. The staggering progress of scientific and technological evolution has added exciting new content to the Visionary program.

The computer and the Internet became indispensable tools for the production, communication, exposure and distribution of Visionary Art, in conjunction with an ever-expanding multimedia circuit. The boundaries between classical artistic disciplines are dissolving.

New spiritual movements, new methods for self-exploration and self-transformation, with or without entheogenic aid, progressively overwrite the background vibrations of the orthodox mystical traditions, cosmic consciousness, planetary integral awareness and visionary culture.

The irresistible stream of time is heading towards the sea of the timeless. The Visionary Artist is floating on its opalescent surface in a time capsule. Steering it at will, upwards or downwards, creating or receiving vision, exploring the rules of manifestation… resting beyond the speed of light.

3). Energetic Transformation

The privacy of encapsulated individual Phantastic-Realistic vision splits up into multiple fractal perspectives.

The smooth skin of the figure reveals the layers underneath, the integrated circuitry of cellular or mechanical tissues, curvatures of genetic architectures and the organising fields of living forms.

The planetary horizon, that has anchored the Phantastic-Realistic narrative in photographic familiarity, is pulled out from under our feet. We are catapulted into the vastness of unimaginable cosmic dimensions. Our universe is but one fold of the multiverse.

Imagination is fluid and plasmic. The materials of the Phantastic-Realistic vision reorganize themselves along subtle light grids, or explode to form myriads of vibrating patterns with features of abstract form and colour play, intermingled with the dust of stars and mirages of alien life forms.

Not long ago the Phantastic-Realistic vision was clearly opposed to the modern looseness of Abstract painting. Now there is a shift from its bipolar orientation to the “tripolarity of realism, fantasy and abstract form”. The new wave of Visionary Art is dreaming a unified field of artistic expression.

We are invited to flow and dance with the new wave.

With time, I’ve come to view my life as a gradual awakening to the Sacred. Along the way, I’ve had powerful dreams and entheogenic experiences to inspire my art and vision. I’ve crossed paths with the Goddess in the guise of some very interesting women, and had the fortune of meeting my master in art through the personnage of Ernst Fuchs. I’ve lived variously in Toronto, Vienna, Malta and Munich. After twelve years in Paris, I recently moved to a farmhouse in Burgundy to further pursue permaculture. My life, at this point, is propelled by encounters with creative people, or travels to places where sacred awakenings can occur. So, I paint, lecture on art, publish articles and teach the Mischtechnik every summer at the eco-village of Torri Superiore, Italy.

GTC : Spirit Art MicroGallery
An art card deck celebrating the spirit of the inspired creative imagination. Spirit art explores the creativity at the heart of the human, a sacred expression sharing an ecology of worlds, entities, beings, landscapes and experiences from the more-than-human world. Spirit art crosses over times and places, it is a thread that weaves through the collective history of all human cultures. It links together interconnected art genres including fantastic art, indigenous art, fantasy art, spiritual art, shamanic art, visionary art, entheo art, magical realism, imaginal realism, and surrealism.

Individual cards may grace altars, mantles, fridges and lockers as objects of beauty and ritual tools. Sets of cards can be organized into ‘micro-galleries’ for displays on walls, workspaces and gallery installations. A full deck of cards may be used an as oracle connecting to a diversity of divinatory systems. The project is an art culture community building initiative intending to inspire the collective evolution of conscious creative process while promoting art and artists worldwide. This non-profit, limited edition gaming system reflects the emergence of planetary culture.
